Opera News aptly praised Courtney Miller’s “fluent musicality,” for her portrayal of Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro with Opera Saratoga.  Known for her “captivating stage presence” and “excellent sense of comic timing,” Courtney excels across genres.  This 2024-25 season, she returns to San Francisco Opera as Warren's Wife in The Handmaid’s Tale, after making her debut with the company as Sister St. Charles in Dialogues of the Carmelites.  Also this season, she makes her role and company debut with Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera as Marcellina in Le Nozze di Figaro, her debut with the San Francisco Choral Society as the Alto Soloist in Mendelssohn’s Elijah, debuts the UC Berkeley Chamber Chorus as the Alto Soloist in Ratcliff’s Ode to Common Things, returns to Pocket Opera as Elmire in Tartuffe, and debuts with Sonoma County Philharmonic as the Alto Soloist in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.  

Additional opera highlights include Berta in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Opera San JoséOlga in Eugene Onegin and Mercédès in Carmen with Florida Grand Opera; Hannah in The Passenger with Detroit Opera; Meg in Little Women with Madison Opera; Mrs. Ford in Sir John in Love with Odyssey Opera; and performing the title role in Carmen aboard Azamara Club Cruises

Described as “possessing a delicacy and diction very appealing, and the strength to bring it home” by The Chautauquan Daily for her selections from Canteloube’s Chants d’Auvergne with the Chautauqua Symphony, Courtney is an award-winning recitalist and concert soloist.  She specializes in curated programs that tell compelling stories highlighting female composers.  Her art song cabaret Tell me the truth about love with collaborator Kevin Korth plays around the Bay Area.  A lover of new music, Courtney has created many roles, including Mina Miller Edison in TESLA (Kievman/Babe), and portrayed characters like Sister Helen in Dead Man Walking (Heggie/McNally), and The Wind in The Witches of Venice (Glass/Montresor).   She has also workshopped pieces with American Lyric Theater, Juventas New Music Ensemble, Opera San José, and Boston Art Song Society.

Courtney’s awards include grand prize winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs’ Young Artist Competition in Women’s Voice and the first place winner of the American Prize in Art Song in Women’s Voice; New England Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Second Place in the Lois Alba Aria Competition, and winner of the Concorso Lirico Internazionale “Anita Cerquetti” in Montecosaro, Italy. 


Courtney received a Master of Music from the Boston Conservatory, where she sang Romeo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi, The Witch in Hansel and Gretel, Concepción in L’heure espagnole, and L’enfant in L’enfant et les sortilège.  She earned a Bachelor of Music from the University of Michigan, where she sang Nancy in Albert Herring.  As a Teaching Artist with the San Francisco Opera Guild, Courtney is a committed educator and mentor.  She currently studies with Dr. Julia Nielsen. On days off, you’ll likely find her in her garden or hiking around the Bay Area.
