Opera News aptly praised Courtney Miller’s “fluent musicality.”  Known for her “captivating stage presence” and “excellent sense of comic timing,” Courtney is equally versed in opera, musical theater, art song, concert work, and cabaret.  A lover of new music, Courtney has created many roles, including Mina Miller Edison in TESLA with SoBe Arts, and portrayed characters like Sister Helen in Dead Man Walking, Elizabeth Griffiths in An American Tragedy, and The Wind in The Witches of Venice.

In the 2023-24 season, Courtney joins Opera San Jos as an Artist-in-Residence singing Gertrude in Romeo et Juliette, Berta in Il barbiere di Siviglia, and Giovanna in Rigoletto. Across the Bay Area, she performs Tell me the truth about love, an art song cabaret about modern love. She also joins Music at the Mission as the mezzo-soprano soloist in a chamber music recital depicting timeless stories of war, anguish and the longing for happiness and peace.

In the 2022-23 season, she made her San Francisco Opera solo debut as Sister St. Charles in Dialogues of the Carmelites, along with covering Flower/Lady 3/Solo Maid in Dream of the Red Chamber.  She also made her Pocket Opera debut as Nancy in Albert Herring and was an inaugural fellow of the Somatic Song Institute with 3340 Recital Series.

Career highlights include Olga in Eugene Onegin with Florida Grand Opera, Hannah in The Passenger with Detroit Opera, Meg in Little Women with Madison Opera, Mrs. Ford in Sir John in Love with Odyssey Opera, Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro with Opera Saratoga, Meg Page in Falstaff with Virginia Opera, and performing the title role of Carmen in an English adaptation aboard Azamara Club Cruises.

Courtney is an avid recitalist and was described as “possessing a delicacy and diction very appealing, and the strength to bring it home” (The Chautauquan Daily) for her performance of selections from Canteloube’s Chants d’Auvergne with the Chautauqua Symphony.  She also performed Ravel’s Shéhérazade with the Brevard Sinfonia in 2015.  In 2013, she was the winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs’ Young Artist Competition in Women’s Voice and the first place winner of the American Prize in Art Song in Women’s Voice.

Courtney’s opera awards include New England Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and Second Place in the 2015 Lois Alba Aria Competition.  In 2016, she won the Concorso Lirico Internazionale “Anita Cerquetti” in Montecosaro, Italy.

Courtney is a committed educator and mentor and an advocate for arts education outreach, working frequently with the San Francisco Opera Guild. She is also an avid gardener and vintage reseller.
